Many owners assume the window motor has burned out. While that is possible, 90% of the time, the motor is fine. The problem is the window regulator.
Think of the regulator as the skeleton that moves the glass. It consists of a system of steel cables, plastic pulleys, and guide rails. Over time—especially in the G-Class and older sedans—the plastic clips become brittle, or the steel cables fray and snap under tension.
Once that cable snaps, gravity takes over. The glass falls into the door cavity, and no amount of button-mashing will bring it back up. In fact, continuing to press the switch can cause the loose cables to tangle around the motor, burning it out and making the repair more expensiv
